I have a '78 Corvette, and need to tweek the front frame a bit.
I've removed the front bumper extension and exposed the two frame
rails. They are both bent slightly to the left (side of the vehicle) of
center in front of the front suspension, probably about a degree off
center.l would like to use a hydraulic jack and some fixturing to bring
them into alignment, as l do not have a large tree or anything else to
attach a come-along to.I am assuming frame straightening at a body shop
takes place without any application of heat to the affected area, but would this help in this kind of DIY situation, and could it be done with a butane torch (used for sweating copper pipe as in plumbing work), or does application of heat mess structural integrity of the frame, which is 4'' x 2'' x 0.120 cold rolled steel (l believe)? A Porter Power ''what''? />Oh, a Porto-Power hydraulic ram! Thanks!I will go rent one, sounds like an easy fix and will save me mucho dinero, plus I've already got a come-along! You ROCK WildManny2!!!
Use a Porter Power .Wedge one end against a frame rail as far
rearward as possible & the other end to the other rail as far forward as
possible.Bend the rail straight,it doesn't need heat.Then with pressure
still applied, pull the other rail toward the first one with a come-a-long.
Or,connect a chain to one of the rails & the other end to a stout frame
rail of a truck. Then snag the chain perpendicular to the car & shock the rail back in place with progressive impacts. This works best & is simple. The force of the chain being pulled straight from an impact from the truck will generate multiple tons of force in the right direction.
